A 315 MHz low phase noise surface acoustic wave (SAW) oscillator based on improving loaded quality factor QL is designed in this paper. The formulation of QL is derived from analysis of Butler common base SAW oscillator circuit.Based on the analysis and derivation, the prototype of 315 MHz Butler SAW oscillator has been designed, and its phase noise level is measured. The SAW resonator utilized in the design is R315 with an unloaded quality factor Q0 of about 1.06×104. The measured phase noise results are -129 dBc/Hz@1 kHz and -161 dBc/Hz@10 kHz respectively.
