The time delay estimation of signals received at two sensors is the first step in time difference of arrival(TDOA) location. Multi path effect is the key factor affecting the performance of the time delay estimation of the sound source signal. Traditional methods are difficult to overcome the effects of multi path. A time delay estimation method based on generalized weighted average magnitude difference function(AMDF) was proposed. The multi path effects can be suppressed by the modified AMDF method. The generalized weighted function can be used to reduce the noise sensitivity of the algorithm. Simulation results show that, with reduced error and improved stability, the performance of proposed method is better than that of the traditional generalized cross correlation method.
