Abstract:Bi morph piezoelectric materials are being used as actuators to convert electrical energy to mechanical deformation in micro robotic applications. Generally, these actuators are being excited using external bulky power supplies, which limit the application scope of the actuators. By utilizing the combination of cascade tapped inductor (CTI) boost stage with high voltage driving a high efficiency and high gain micro driving system for Bi morph piezoelectric materials are designed and fabricated in this work. The proposed micro driving system has the following abilities of peak energy conversion efficiency of 68.5%, step up gain of 162, output frequency of 4 Hz, and output voltage of 600 V. The experimental results show that the micro driving system is capable to drive the Bi morph piezoelectric material and can be applied to a wide variety of micro robot applications.
